| In emergencies when there is
not enough time to determine a patient’s blood group,
when there is not enough time to find ‘replacement’
donors, when a patient’s blood group is quite rare and
when certain surgeries are performed where the need for blood
far exceeds the entire blood volume of the patient, Autologous
Cell Salvage comes to the rescue.
This is the process of recycling the blood lost by the patient.
Since Cell Salvage prevents additional loss of blood from
the point of its application, it ensures that the patient
is stabilized while the doctors determine curative action.
It also allows the hospital to secure, if required, additional
blood that is suitably matched to the patients’ before
any transfusion is attempted.
In surgical blood salvage, automated systems collect blood
lost during or after surgery, clean it, and make it available
for reinfusion. This process is used worldwide in more than
a million surgeries each year.
This serves as an alternative to blood from donors and ensures
that the patient receives the best quality blood (one’s
own), improves patient care and reduces cost. Use of blood
salvage techniques is one of the most powerful tools to reduce
donor blood transfusions.
Application of Cell Salvage
The Cell Saver suctions out blood from the site of the injury
or operation. Particulate matter, if any, are removed in 150
micron filter. The residual fluid is then sent into the centrifuge
for separating the Red Blood Cells (RBC) from the other blood
components. The RBCs are then further processed to remove
any residual contaminants and are then available for transfusion.
Further application includes the removal of postoperative
ooze from the operative site and the processing of the same
for the return of the RBCs for up to 24 hours after the operation.
